ACR question - what does the fill light slider do?

The Fill Light control in ACR's Basic tab can be used to recover detail in the shadows without affecting the highlights or causing posterization.

Keep the questions coming.

Enjoy the day.

I shoot in RAW using a 18-135 and 70-300 lens on my Nikon D80. After shooting birds on the beach
I noticed I had to use the fill slider in Photoshop on every one to diminish the smeary irridescent highlights in every shot. What did I do wrong? The slider worked on most, but not all. Thanks. Carolyn

I don't mean to sound thick, but is your question about lighting the scene or the sliders working differently on each image?
